Watercolour on Coated Cardstock

Following Violet's lead, I have been painting on scraps of cardstock.  During this process, I have found that coated cardstock is a fun surface to paint on.  (I discovered this by accident, when I pulled a scrap of a pearlescent cardstock from my stash.)

Watercolour paper is traditionally sized with gelatin, so that the paint does not sink immediately into the paper, but floats on the surface.  Coated cardstock performs in the same way; uncoated cardstock soaks up the paint immediately.

Artists who create a lot of art and break the rules often speak of "happy accidents".  This was one of those!

Two for the Price of One

You can get two 6 1/2" x 5 1/2" flip flop fly cards from a single sheet of cardstock, so I made a second one.

Flip Flop Fly!

This is called a flip flop fly card; Violet taught us how to make these in our Fabulous Flat Brush Flowers class this week.  They're hard to photograph, unfortunately.

We also learned how to paint daffodils - such fun!

Hard to Pick Just One!

I'm taking Fabulous Flat Brush Flowers with Violet Smythe.  I know Violet from the Westcoast Calligraphy Society, and I have taken in-person workshops with her.  Now she's teaching on Zoom, and she brings her usual infectious inspiration to her online offerings.

Our homework for this week is to do a postcard, so as well as daily practice, I've been making lots of "art bits".  They'll make great greeting cards, too.

Here is the one I've chosen to send to Violet as my homework.  She's going to create a slideshow for us to watch at our next class.  I can't wait to see everyone's work!

Melinda

I had a stab at digital collage the other day.

Melinda was my great grandmother.  I used an Android app called PicsArt to create the collage from a neighbourhood photo, a gelli print and a photograph of Melinda.

Small Art

I made some small abstract watercolour pieces recently.

They are the size of Artist Trading Cards (2 1'2" x 3 1/2").

They would also work on the front of greeting cards.

I created them from a larger piece.

I got the idea from Ceecee.

Here is the 6" x 9" piece I cut these from.

Happy New Year!

Greeting Card, 4 1/4" x 5 1/2"
Watercolour and Posca Paint Pen on Gelli Print

While we're celebrating the possibilities of 2021, I'm organizing my birthday calendar for the new year.  It's time to make a few cards.

During the last week I've been playing with a new 5" x 7" gelli plate,  making papers for mounting greetings.  The new plate is a perfect size for a card front.
