Vancouver Urban Sketchers Draw Interiors

 

The Vancouver Urban Sketchers ran a challenge to draw an interior.  I did this from the comfort of my office couch.

Bonjour, Madame

 

I drew this for a Vancouver Urban Sketchers challenge, "A Memorable Urban Street Scene".  The reference photo was taken in Beaugency, France, in 2005. 

Colour First, then the Drawing

 

This was another fun challenge courtesy of the Vancouver Urban Sketchers Group.  I used a natural sponge to clean out my palette, then headed out to Cambie Street to see what I could find.  This scooter was parked right by a bench in the shade - I couldn't ask for anything better!

Less is More

 

Less is More is one of the events for the Vancouver Urban Sketchers group.  It is meant to inspire line drawings; here is my line drawing of a traffic calming circle in my neighbourhood.

I Liked Drawing the Car Best

 

We have a little shaded corner spot in our neighbourhood with a bench, community library and a wooden chess set.  It's a perfect place for some Urban Sketching!

Because I enjoyed drawing the car the best, I returned a couple of days later to sketch a couple of other parked cars. 

Starting Where I Am

 

I'm practicing some sketching from life - these sneakers came off and lay in an inspiring position!

2nd Vaccine Urban Sketching

 

An artist friend encouraged me to join the Vancouver Urban Sketchers group when she saw an online event for showcasing vehicle sketches.  This inspired me to do some REAL urban sketching (i.e. in real life, not from a photo).  Forced to hang out after my 2nd COVID vaccine I sketched this.

It's a totally different experience and I'm very rusty, but you have to start somewhere, right?  And in two weeks I'll feel more comfortable being "out and about", so who knows?

Last week I stopped for lunch at Tim Horton's before a physiotherapy appointment.  This was my view out the window...

Sketching at the Cemetery

Some people don't like cemeteries; I love them.  They are like parks, only quieter.

Sketching at the Library

The overhead lights are too diffuse at the library to show good shadows, but I had fun with the chairs in this drawing.  The idea of drawing all the books on the shelves didn't appeal to me, however.

A Visit to My Grandfather's Grave

I never knew my grandfather, but recently I went to visit his grave site for the first time. I certainly never expected to find a bare patch of grass between the other markers in the row. I confirmed my findings with a very helpful young man in the office. When my grandfather died in 1945, two plots were purchased in the Masonic Cemetery in Burnaby, BC.  No marker was ever erected, and in 1955, the second plot was sold back to the cemetery. 

It is no wonder that I find genealogy fascinating - the mysteries and discoveries are endless!

The Chairs of Belvedere

This could be a series - The Chairs of Belvedere.  If my mom is sleeping when I visit her I often draw a chair.   This is direct to watercolour; I'm still doing the 30x30 challenge.

First Coffee Sketch

The coffee shop and indeed, the coffee, make frequent appearances in the journals of many urban sketchers.  As well as making interesting subjects, one advantage of the coffee shop setting are the tables.  I've never spent a lot of time in coffee shops, but I met an old friend for coffee recently.  I arrived early and did this quick sketch before she arrived. 

What's New?

I went to visit my mother in the care home,

and bought some new toys.  One is a "magic pencil" with multiple colours of lead.  More about that later.

And it snowed again.  Thankfully, that was last week and the sun is out this week.
