Thirty Days of Bible Lettering Project

The last few days of the #30daysofbiblelettering project brought a flurry of supply experiments with them.  Here is the last page in the journal I made for the project, done with Twinkling H20's.  It is Weaver Writing, and I added a shadow with a pencil.

 

 

So the journal was finished, but the project still had a few more days to go.  This is purple gouache with white added so that it pops on the black paper.

 

 

Next, I tried out some Daniel Smith watercolors.  I only have three colors, but with the three primaries you can mix anything!  I was trying to convince myself that I didn't need the new set of Artist Loft watercolors that I had seen in this video.

 

I was using a new brush, a Pentel Aquash brush that I have been eyeing for months and is also used in the video .

 

 

I weakened, and bought the watercolors.  I tried them out in this final piece.  And yes, I love them for lettering.  Having all of those yummy colors already mixed is perfect for a quick quote.  It doesn't make sense to spend more time mixing than lettering. LOL 



 

There was one more day left in the project, but that day brought a jazzy background worth its own blog entry, so stay tuned.

 



Butterfly Meadow

 

These Artist Trading Cards were quick and fun to do.  Using a stamp by Crafty Individuals, I stamped using Versamark, and then applied Pan Pastels.  And then I experimented with all kinds of color combinations!





Drawing Pinecones for Stamp Carving

 

I was inspired by Jane LaFazio to hand carve a pinecone stamp.  I used my sketchbook to gather together some previous pinecone artwork and to sketch a few different kinds of cones.  (This is just one small sample of all that I drew).  I eventually decided on a Douglas-Fir cone.  The Douglas-Fir isn't a pine and it isn't a fir either, but that's an entirely different subject, isn't it!

 

You can see the finished stamp here also.  I used this ochre color to stamp out the cone as I proceeded.  I use a light color so that I can still see the drawing on the rubber material.

Cheap metallic watercolors - Laurentian brand

 

At last month's Westcoast Calligraphy Society meeting, we were writing on black paper.  We used pencil crayons, pastels, watercolor and gouache.  Gel pens work well too.  The results are always surprising to me - you have to try out a few different colours and see what works!

 

As usual, we are asked to do some homework to share at the next meeting, so I used black paper for a couple of my #30daysofbiblicalwriting project.

Silly Scraps Saturday

Remembering

 

 

A few weeks ago I went on a bird walk in VanDusen Botanical Gardens.  We were lucky enough to catch a good view of a Barred Owl who lives in the park.

 

Another day, a friend dropped by with a flower from a Dove Tree.  The flower, drawn at actual size, filled an entire page in my 8 1/2" x 11" sketchbook!
