It was a snowy day in Vancouver on April 1, 1936.  For you Vancouver folks, this is Granville St. looking south from Pender St.

Wheels Off the Ground

 

We're back at the 1996 Indy today, photograph courtesy of John Denniston.  It's a great photograph, but I found the composition difficult for sketching.

Austin Minis in the Hood

 

We seem to have a lot of Austin Minis in our neighbourhood.  I like them because they are small and cute, so I drew a couple of them.

Ritchie's Homecoming

 

This photo from John Denniston's The Car Project inspired me to do something with an Urban Sketching feel, although it can't be strictly classified as that.  It is photo #33 if you are following along.

The photographs are black and white so I can paint my cars whatever color I like, and this convertible had to be red.

A Nice Round One

 

Life has been getting in the way of sketching and blogging lately, but I do have a few more that I did from the lovely photographs of local photographer John Denniston.

How to Choose?

 

This was inspired by another of John Denniston's photos from The Car Project.

When Janice sent me the link to her cousin's website, she said she would be interested to see which photos  I would choose to draw from.

This one had me at the car, but the Midas sign was definitely a contributing factor.  Thanks, Janice!

My Cup Runneth Over

 

I couldn't resist a photo with a car and a shopping cart.  It turned out that the bucket was pretty fun too.

My friend Janice found the photo for me.  Her cousin, John Denniston, is a retired newspaper photographer, and still loves to take pictures.   He did an entire project devoted to cars, and you can find them on his website here.  

If John isn't too appalled I'll do a few more.

I Couldn't Resist

 

I couldn't resist getting out the metallic paints for this vintage Dodge.  Once again, I was inspired by @mozarts_ride, who had this to say about his photo:

1930 Dodge ....The Dodge is an American brand of automobile manufactured by FCA US LLC, and is based in Auburn Hills, Michigan. Founded originally as the Dodge Brothers Company machine shop in the early 1900s. The original factory was located in Hamtramck, Michigan from 1910 - 1980. Today Dodge cars are built in Canada, Mexico, Detroit, Illinois, and Ohio.

@tobyurbansketch challenged me with his drawing challenge #drawtobyscar.  He went for a run with a friend and was "utterly fascinated with this burnt out car".

I Liked Drawing the Car Best

 

We have a little shaded corner spot in our neighbourhood with a bench, community library and a wooden chess set.  It's a perfect place for some Urban Sketching!

Because I enjoyed drawing the car the best, I returned a couple of days later to sketch a couple of other parked cars. 

1957 Chevy Bel Air

 

@mozart_ride has this to say about the photo that inspired this sketch:

1957 Chevy Bel Air parked on the streets of Lowell, Az. So much history on one short street in one small town. “Tonight, tonight the strip’s just right; I want to blow ‘em off in my first heat; Summer’s here and the time is right; For racin’ in the street.”⁣

1915 Casey Jones Rail Auto

 You can't get any better than a train and an automobile all in one!

This is sketched from another inspirational photo by @mozarts_ride.  Here is what he says about it on Instagram:

This is the 1915 Casey Jones Rail Auto. The rail auto was used as an ambulance and a rail bus to transport miners from the mine into Silverton. It was restored in 1918, using a Cadillac Series 51 auto chassis, engine, transmission, driveshaft, and differential. The white bus enclosure, rebuilt in 1929, holds up to 12 people. (Now you know the rest of the story.) “Casey Jones you better watch your speed: Trouble ahead, trouble behind; And you know that notion just crossed your mind….”⁣

Miss Lucy

He says this about Miss Lucy:

1931 Ford Coupe... an "Around Town" shot...Spoted "Miss Lucy" at a local antique store, just down the street from where I live.. You just got to love her flax water bag, attached to the front bumper... 😎

Sunbeams and the Enemy of Done

 

These are for my husband, who used to own a Sunbeam and who took the reference photos for these sketches.  

My sketches remind me of Goldilocks and the three bears - one is too short and one is too long.  But perfection is the enemy of done, right?
