Hide

Inspiration Photo:  Kelly Sikkema, Unsplash

I've been accused of "hiding" myself behind a book now and then.  Anyone else?

Hope

Inspired by a Photo by Diego PH, Unsplash

Inktober has come and gone for another year.  I didn't participate last year, but I was drawn to begin on October 1 and I did something each day.  Some of them were half-hearted attempts, and I didn't share anything on social media this time.

There were some things I really enjoyed about my casual approach and process this year, though.  Until the last few days, when lettering took over, I would type the prompt into Unsplash, and sketch whichever photo I liked the best.  I didn't think about how well it represented the prompt.  In fact, I didn't think at all - this is what I liked about it!

On the first day, I wanted to sketch with a brush, so I swiped it across Inktense Blocks; the use of "ink" was the only rule I followed.  I ended up using Inktense and a brush most days.

Ominous

This Inktober prompt took an "ominous" turn for Hallowe'en.  I'll post some Inktober sketches in coming days, but I've been influenced by a Ben Shahn program this week at our monthly Westcoast Calligraphy Society meeting.

Happy Hallowe'en!

Inktober - Days 7 to 12

The daily prompts were:

7.  Exhausted
8.  Star
9.  Precious

The collaboration on our calendars took a turn last week.  My sister has fallen in love with cross stitch, diamond painting, and knitting and hasn't been inspired to draw.  She's great at interpreting the prompts, though, so she helps me come up with ideas.  That's great collaboration, because my brain freezes at some of these.

10.  Flow
11.  Cruel
12.  Whale

Inktober - Days 1 - 6

My sister and I are participating in Inktober again this year; we're using our calendars to do a little ink drawing.  We're using the prompts provided by the organizer:
  1. Poisonous
  2. Tranquil
  3. Roasted
  4. Spell
  5. Chicken
  6. Drool

I've participated in Inktober before.  If you'd like to see the different approaches I've used you can click on the Inktober tag in the Media and Projects word cloud on the right.

Reflections on Inktober - Part 2

Elegant Writer and Inktense Blocks

By the last few days of Inktober, I was feeling small and tight, from all the drawing and calligraphy.  I began throwing paint and gesso around, and joined an on-line class called "Permission to Play".

One of the last prompts was "surprise", and I was ready to be surprised, so I got out the Elegant Writer for some flowers.

Reflections on Inktober - Part 1

I don't usually follow prompts, but one of the things I liked best about Inktober was the creative challenge to make something interesting out of a prompt:

Good Days and Bad Days

Some days I can only "squeeze" a doodle out:

I had a bright(?) idea of adding color to this and turning it into something else, but that idea hasn't materialized yet.  We all have good days and bad days.

Inktober Continues

I couldn't resist capturing a little of the US Presidential election drama:

And I'm starting to look forward to a mid-winter escape!
